Feature Requests

Hi,

We’ve been working with Kyno for a while. We use it with students selecting, tagging and sub-clipping . I have a few feature requests that would make our workflow easier.

1 Ability to hide clips that haven’t been tagged. Not all the clips on a card will be used, we only tag the ones we want to use. If we can hide all untagged clips, that would be great.

2 Add up complete runtime of all selected clips and sub clips. Then display how much space those clips will take up when they are converted to various Editing  and distribution CODECS.

3 On the main thumbnail view. Add the ability to multi-select clips with subclips, then be able from a short cut menu display, all the subclips and be able to double click them for playback.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

1 already works, is just a bit hard to find. In the dropdown menu for tags in the tag filter, there are the last two options "Any" (means show all files that have tags, which is what you want) and "None", which shows fies that have not been tagged. We will move those options to the top of the list in the next update, so they are more obvious.

2 looks very interesting and we have the functionality there internally (as you can see in the video settings dialog where you will see the projected file size) but we need to do some thinking how we would integrate that in terms of UI.

3 Looks interesting and making subclips a bit more accessible like that does make sense but is a major thing in terms of UI and is not likely to make it into releases for the next 3-4 months.

Thanks for the feedback. Those are all really good and helpful. Just have a bit of patience as the list of things we are working on at the moment is pretty packed with some things you will hopefully find useful too.

Best,

Thomas

Thanks Thomas.

Hi Ian,

a spontaneous idea regarding number 2. I think what might fulfill the requirement would be if we calculated the approximate size for the entire batch whenever you open the transcoding dialog. So you would select your list of clips and select "Convert" or "Export subclips", select the preset and then be able to see the approximate size. This is a bit of a compromise but it does what it should and it would not require an entirely new UI component, which we try to avoid as Kyno is, by design, already quite feature-packed which doesn't make it easier for the users to find some of the more advanced functionality.

What do you think?

One thing to be aware of is that most codecs do not allow an exact calculation. It is rather a rough estimate for most compressed formats but nevertheless helpful.

Best,

Hi Thomas,

I was thinking about this last night. I was going to suggest the same thing. You get an estimated size from the conversion dialogue box. It wouldn't have to be 100% accurate. This is to set a volume size on EditShare. So I would always add on 10 - 20%. It would let the students to come and ask for the space they required rather than me having to work it out for them each time. The formats we use are ProRes 422 and 422 LT.

Thanks

Ian
