Low CPU Usage

I built a PC specifically for transcoding raw footage to proxies based around a 16 core Ryzen 9 3950X.  I have noticed when transcoding I am often getting less than 20% usage on my CPU.  When I was using an i9 9900K I frequently sat between 90 and 100%.  Is there a way to fix this?

CPU usage while transcoding in Kyno broadly depends on two factors:

  1. amount of parallel transcoding jobs
  2. used codecs (both on the decoding and encoding side, the latter usually more relevant). Some codecs (or rather decoder/encoder implementations) can parallelize the work better than others. Some codecs cause more GPU usage than CPU usage

Of course there are other possible bottlenecks like disk i/o speed, but it doesn't sound like that's a factor in your case.

You can adjust 1) under Kyno or Help - Preferences - Conversion - Maximum parallel conversions. You can play around with that value to find the optimal usage for your set of files.
